“Rill Rill” is the one Sleigh Bells song you can play for your mom. Fittingly enough, then, that its gentle acoustic foundations were laid when Mom was your age. I learned this recently while spending some time with my friend Dan, who informed me that the most important work on “Rill Rill” had actually been done four decades ago. That’s when Funkadelic, on their 1971 record Maggot Brain, released “Can You Get to That” — a gentle, gospel-influenced soul track about living in harmony. A prominent sample from the song found a welcome home in this year’s “Rill Rill,” offering a welcome respite to those of us who found the rest of Treats’ day-glo noise assault wearying.
Take away the Funkadelic sample and “Rill Rill” still has much to recommend it. But if you love the song you ought to listen to what made it possible: a bit of pure ’70s soul far likelier to stand the test of time than a neon flash in the pan like Sleigh Bells.
