Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi – “Two Against One”
As great as Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells are, it’s the transcendent art projects like this for which I love and worship Danger Mouse. He once said in an interview with Chuck Klosterman that the role he aims to play in the music industry is unnamed, but it is most similar to that of an auteur, using Woody Allen as his prime example (although Scorsese or Hitchcock would’ve been wholly appropriate as well). Dark Night Of The Soul was nearing that, but I think Rome has more effectively made his point.
In Rome Luppi and Burton have “directed” an undeniably beautiful work of art. Not only have they acquired the best possible voices in Jack White and Norah Jones for their “lead roles,” assembled a “supporting cast” that includes the very musicians responsible for their inspiration (Leone’s memorable soundtracks of the sixties, for example), and they even recorded in the original chambers in which that inspiration was founded. Burton has created something that, although obviously derivative in nature and practice, is so unique and potent that it will surely stand alone as one of the best albums of the year.
