Adorable Newborn Animal of the Day: The Chicago Zoological Society recently announced the addition of a new member to the Brookfield Zoo’s okapi family. An as-yet unnamed female calf was born on April 27; mom Semliki and baby are both doing well.
From the press release:
Also known as “forest giraffes,” okapi are a rare hoofed mammal native to the dense Ituri Forest in the northeast corner of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The species was not discovered by American and European scientists until the early 1900s. Because of okapi’s elusiveness, little has been known about their behavior in the wild, including how they raise their calves.
Fun Fact: Brookfield Zoo was home to the first okapi birth in North America back in 1959.
