When it comes to on screen Wing Chun most people are quick to talk about the Ip Man films. All six thousand of them.
However, back in the early 80′s, Sammo Hung directed what is often considered by fans of the genre to be the quintessential Wing Chun film, The Prodigal Son.
In my opinion, it has the finest (exaggerated) Wing Chun fights ever committed to film. Just watch the clip above and tell me it isn’t pure art. The crisp handwork, the long takes, the rhythm. Perfection.
Is it sped up? Maybe. But that’s the only thing negative to say about this scene. Otherwise, I’d say it’s my second favourite fight sequence of all time. I adore it.
Weirdly, Frankie Chan (the dude with the mustache) didn’t go on to have that much success. I mean, he made some great films but he never reached the upper echelon of kung fu cinema legends.
If you’re a Wing Chun fan or even someone just dipping their toes into the genre, seek this bad boy out. You won’t be let down.

Do yourself a favour, get your mates over, crack open a few cheeky beers and check this film on.
