Superchunk Cover The Cure - “In Between Days”
Though I haven’t mentioned the A.V. Club’s Undercover project since Ben Folds’ moving rendition of Elliott Smith’s “Say Yes,” a number of notable covers have gone down in the Onion’s odd little circular performance space since then — namely, Frightened Rabbit’s Lemonheads cover and a beautiful, ukulele-backed take on Journey’s “Faithfully” by Eef Barzelay of Clem Snide. Thanks to Slicing Up Eyeballs, however, I won’t be late to the party for the latest edition: Superchunk covering 1985 the Cure single, “In Between Days.”
Technically, Mac McCaughan and co. could have revamped their very own song, as 1995’s “Detroit Has A Skyline” is still up for grabs, but, as they explain in the intro, that safer option was never on the table. Instead, they removed all possible new wave affectations from the Cure’s tune and injected it with a healthy dose of power-pop. The intro to this vid isn’t a confidence-builder for the performance to follow, but when guitarist Jim Wilbur cuts in you’ll know they’re about to kill it. Hear the Cure’s original version here and watch Superchunk’s above.
