  • Promo EP
  • Satellite Stories

    Helsinki Art Scene

  • Satellite Stories remind me of a bunch of artists that have been featured here on SFTL like Tokyo Police Club and Two Door Cinema Club but Finnish. They’re a group of four dudes who just want to make music that makes you want to get up and do the hipster shuffle. “Helsinki Art Scene” is my personal favourite song from what they’ve released so far. Their Promo EP comes out soon and you should check out the rest of their tracks.

Have you ever walked around in Lower Manhattan and noticed a trail of paint on the sidewalk?

About 3 years ago, one of my friends in school decided to follow the trail around and noticed that the trail produced the image that you see above; a strange-looking rendering of what appeared to be the word “momo.” MOMO, we found out, was the name of an artist that used to be based in NYC, and sure enough, the one responsible for tagging his name across the width of Manhattan.

After requesting a meetup, MOMO told my friend that he accomplished this task by fixing 5 gallon paint buckets to the back of his bike, poking a hole in the bottom of the containers, and riding though the West Village, SoHo, Greenwich Village, East Village, and Alphabet City. Momo made the tag in 2006. Some parts of the line have been covered up by roadwork and redone sidewalks but most of the line is still visible.

To me, the interesting thing about the line is how both similar and different it is to regular graffiti. Essentially, most graffiti writers enjoy seeing their name on things. The bigger they can paint it and the more visible their tag is, the more people will notice their conquering of the city. MOMO created the largest tag in New York, yet the scale of his work here, so massive that it can’t all be viewed at once, means that thousands of people will walk on it each day and never even notice it. It’s simultaneously the biggest and smallest artistic statement I have seen in my time here.

MOMO made a video about the line which you can see here.

If you ever walk over it, now you’ll know what you’re looking at.

This is so infinitely cool.

Clever people are so refreshing.

Neutral Milk Hotel - ”King of Carrot Flowers, pt. 1

I was born eight to ten years too early. The bands that have the heaviest rotation in my iTunes are all ones who exploded on the charts throughout the 90s. When In the Aeroplane over the Sea was released, I was 9.

Now, granted, after the 2005 rerelease of this album, Neutral Milk Hotel has started getting the recognition they deserve. A 90s band with a unique sound, punctuated by Jeff Magnum’s unique voice, the acoustics and imagery are personal. Magnum tells us stories. Some are reminiscent of our own lives and others of familiar figures. The album was allegedly inspired by Anne Frank’s Diary of a Girl.

“The King of Carrot Flowers, pt. 1” reflects on the imperfect life of a girl as it parallels her physical and emotional relationship with Magnum’s narrator. At once romantic and beautiful but also tragic, the lyrics cumulate with the soft sounds of the song, forcing you to actively listen.

Unfortunately, the group broke up in 1999 with no signs of reuniting, and their old-school, still-has-their-1998-tour-dates-on-it website confirms that.

This Looks Shopped of the Day: Actually, it’s an honest-to-goodness photo of a telephone pole near the Volgograd-adjacent village of Linevo, which has recently been scorched by a wild firestorm.
