Sally Menke, Quentin Tarantino’s editor on all his films, was found dead this morning in Griffith Park, where she’d taken her dog yesterday for a walk in the intense Los Angeles heat. Her first film was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but she hooked up with Tarantino for Reservoir Dogs, and he never worked with anyone else. Above is a video of cast members of Inglourious Basterds, at the end of particular takes or flubbed lines, saying, “Hi, Sally!” a message to Menke back in the editing room. She was 56 years old.

crumbler: “Rill Rill” is the one Sleigh Bells song you can play...
“Rill Rill” is the one Sleigh Bells song you can play for your mom. Fittingly enough, then, that its gentle acoustic foundations were laid when Mom was your age. I learned this recently while spending some time with my friend Dan, who informed me that the most important work on “Rill Rill” had actually been done four decades ago. That’s when Funkadelic, on their 1971 record Maggot Brain, released “Can You Get to That” — a gentle, gospel-influenced soul track about living in harmony. A prominent sample from the song found a welcome home in this year’s “Rill Rill,” offering a welcome respite to those of us who found the rest of Treats’ day-glo noise assault wearying.
Take away the Funkadelic sample and “Rill Rill” still has much to recommend it. But if you love the song you ought to listen to what made it possible: a bit of pure ’70s soul far likelier to stand the test of time than a neon flash in the pan like Sleigh Bells.

Since the dawn of cinema, crews have built realistic sets for their films. The classic tokusatsu films like Godzilla, produced by Toho Studios, required life-size sets as well of scale miniature cities to tell the story. While the monsters may have been the big guys on camera, the human production crews were the giants behind the scenes.
I found an out-of-print book, Japanese Special Effects Films Illustrated, at a local library. The pictorial guide features information and tons of behind-the-scenes shots from dozens classic Toho SFX films.
